It has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for more than 4000 years due to its medicinal properties.\u00a0 Neem is called \u2018arista\u2019 in Sanskrit a word that means perfect, complete and imperishable.\u00a0 Most of the plant parts such as fruits, seeds, leaves, bark and roots contain compounds with proven antiseptic, antiviral, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer and antifungal uses.\u00a0 The Sanskrit name \u2018nimba\u2019 comes from the term \u2018nimbati swasthyandadati\u2019 which means to give good health.\u00a0 <!--more-->The benefits of neem have been listed in detail in ancient documents like Charak and Sushrutha Samhitas.\u00a0 The Persian name of Neem is \u2018Azad-Darakth-E-Hind\u2019 which means \u2018Free tree of India.\u2019\u00a0 Neem tree is the most researched and is said to be the most promising tree of 21<sup>st<\/sup> century.\u00a0 It has great potential in the fields of pest management, environment protection and medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Since time immemorial Indians are aware of medicinal properties of neem.\u00a0 Neem has been extensively used in Ayurveda, Unani and Homeopathy.\u00a0 Traditionally, many disorders like inflammation, infections, fever, skin diseases, dental disorders and others have been treated with different parts of neem tree such as leaves, flowers, seeds, fruits, roots and bark.\u00a0 Neem leaf exhibits a wide range of pharmacological activities like anti-inflammatory, antihyperglycaemic, antiulcer, antioxidant, antimalarial, antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, anticarcinogenic and immunomodulatory.<\/p>\n<p>Ayurvedic literature lists various medicinal uses of neem.\u00a0 It describes neem bark to be cool, bitter, astringent.\u00a0 It is useful in tiredness, cough, fever, loss of appetite, worm infestation in the form of decoction.\u00a0 It can also be used in skin diseases and diabetes.\u00a0 Neem leaves are beneficial for eye disorders and insect poisons.\u00a0 It is a proven antileprotic.\u00a0 Neem fruits are bitter, antihaemorrhoid and antihelmenthic.<\/p>\n<p>Neem is called \u2018Sarvaroga nivarini\u2019 meaning the curer of all ailments.\u00a0 In rural India, delivery chambers are fumigated with burning bark of neem.\u00a0 Dried neem leaves are burnt to repel mosquitos.\u00a0 Neem leaf paste has been used to treat chicken pox, warts etc.\u00a0 Neem twigs are used as tooth brushes in rural India which helps in reducing the oral plaque index and bacterial count.
